It's been a debate for years. Is hormone replacement therapy safe for woman going through menopause? 7s Lynn Martinez has the latest answers and ways to get hormone help.
When Bonnie Christie started going through menopause six years ago, she felt like her life was turned upside down. Menopause symptoms were debilitating. The hot flashes were intense. They brought about anxiety. The 52-year-old says she felt so horrible she stopped eating right and exercising. Menopause caused me to gain between 18 and 20 pounds instantly. She says her first shot of hormone replacement therapy, a generic patch was not the answer. "The generic patch made me feel worse". That's when Bonnie's doctor told her about hormone pellet therapy. The pellets which are about the size of a grain of rice are implanted under the skin and release bio-identical hormones into the body.
Once it's in, you're there for six months. You don't have to think about it anymore and during the day and night you're getting a smooth distribution of the hormones into your system. Dr. Ghen from BocaRaton's Sanctuary Medical Center says he has been using it on patients for a decade. He warns not all hormone replacement therapies are alike. It looks identical to the molecule that is in the female or male. Where as the other, when typically bought from the store or from prescription, unfortunately is a little bit different and that little bit of change could cause the body to see it as a foreign material.
Over the years there's been controversy over the use of hormone replace therapy because of the fear of increased heart disease and cancer risks.
If someone knows that they are have breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, they would not be a good candidate at the moment for hormone replacement. We have to look at what is the benefit, what is the risk. If you have a clean bill of health, the doctor says the right kind of hormone replacement can be a life changer.
I think if woman want to go through life and stay healthy we the their whole life we have to look at when were we the healthiest from 18 to 25. No one was getting cancer. We can mimic the hormone levels of when we were healthy, that would be the best to keep us healthy long term. Bonnie has been on the pellet therapy for two months and already notices a world of difference. The water weight gain dissipated. My energy level was up. I began sleeping at night. I can focus on my work. You begin slowly to feel bet better. Doctors measure what hormones you need and how much you need. You should get a physical exam and blood work before starting any therapy.
